Hello Friends, We often need to upgrade our ubuntu OS, to get updated and use latest Ubuntu. We might be facing a common problem that the system will be unable to boot normally after install. It might be happen because of boot formate changes.

Older systems were using Legacy BIOS mode now the newer uses UEFI(Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) mode.

If you were using a system having Legacy BIOS mode and installed never version of ubuntu, now you restart your system after installing fresh ubuntu you will be facing problem like:

error: file '/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.
grub rescue>
# sudo or any other grub command may not work at this terminal

Fixes:

If you got above problem don’t worry at all you have already installed the ubuntu no need to reinstall it. just follow these steps:

  • Force reboot your system and go to boot menu(BIOS setup)
  • Change boot format from legacy to UEFI
  • Press F10 and press enter.

Now you can see your system will be upgraded and boot normally.

Best practice while upgrading / Installing new ubuntu:

  • Choose something else option when setup ask for choose drive.
  • Make a drive partition of atleast 40MB with efi partition format
  • Normally install your ubuntu.
  • Change boot format from legacy to UEFI in the BIOS setting.
  • Restart your system.
